Global Studies Experiential Internship (GSEI)

We equip future leaders with the skills, knowledge, and tools to implement effective and sustainable solutions to community strengthening, modern slavery, and child protection.

What is a Global Studies Experiential Internship?

Global Studies Experiential Internship (GSEI) is a project-based internship in which students work collaboratively to solve real-world challenges in the areas of community strengthening, child protection, human trafficking, and the commercial sexual exploitation of children. 

 

Program elements include up to 4 St. James Research Centre (SJRC) courses (credit optional), collaborative project design, mentorship and guidance, reflection and journaling, group discussions, evaluation, community engagement, personal development, final presentations, and post-program support. 

The 4 month GSEI programme is located at our training centre in Falkirk, Scotland. Upon completion, additional internship opportunities may be available with a Global Family partner around the world. 

Applications are received on a rolling basis.

What will I learn?

Part 1: Scotland

In the first four months of the GSEI programme, interns work collaboratively at our training centre in Falkirk, Scotland to solve real-world challenges in the areas of community strengthening, child protection, human trafficking, and the commercial sexual exploitation of children. Interns will also take up to 4 available SJRC courses (credit optional; US accredited transcript fee is GBP 30 per course).

St. James Research Centre is located in Falkirk, Scotland. The centre is located a short walking distance away from shopping, groceries, gyms, a movie theatre, and a train station with easy access to Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Falkirk

Falkirk and the surrounding area is bursting with brilliant contrasts. The area boasts some outstanding attractions, including The Kelpies, The Helix, The Falkirk Wheel, Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway, the Antonine Wall, and The John Muir Way.

 

Falkirk is centrally located and less than a 30 minute train ride to Edinburgh, Glasgow and Stirling. Falkirk itself is full of character, local restaurants, well known attractions and tourist sites in Scotland.

Part 2: Global Family International

After your internship in Scotland, you may choose to work in one of Global Family's international programme locations. You will work in one of Global Family's model countries with a team of local professionals, researchers, and practitioners. We will work with you to identify your skills and goals, and to place you in a location that matches your previous and desired experience.

  • April 1st - July 31st 2024

  • August 1st - November 30th

Housing

SJRC provides hostel style accommodation with a shared room, kitchen, and living areas, right in our centre! Housing at SJRC costs GBP 100/week. 

Programme Elements

The programme includes:

  • Up to (4) accredited courses offered at SJRC

  • Monthly cultural outing 

  • Collaborative project design

  • Individual mentorship and guidance

  • Reflection, journaling, and personal development 

  • Group discussions, sharing, and final presentations 

  • Evaluation, assessment, and post-program support

  • Community engagement 

  • For interns who want to raise funds for their experience, a personalized crowd-funding page on DirectGood.org, which provides tax-deductible receipts to donors in the United States, will be created
